I lived in Pismo Beach back in the early 1980's... It was a very cool place to live. Growing up...the beach was my back yard...and we had tons of fun. Today it has really changed...I drove through back in 1991 & then again in 2001... Back in the day it was known for it's clam digging...you could eat the best Clam Chowder on the west coast in downtown Pismo. We use to play on the beach everyday. Playing army, hide 'n go seek, swiming, running up & down the beach, ice plant wars(ice plant looks like aloe vera plant that grows on a vine & covers the beaches of California), watching the sealife from the cliffs(sea lions, otters, some whales, good ol seals, & yes, plenty of seagulls) I can also remember the FOG...at times very thick. So thick you couldn't see in front of you, but it also made it very quiet, it absorded the sound, and sometimes you wouldn't know someone was walking by you, until you saw them. I also loved going down to the Pismo Pier...go fishing, eat some good seafood, & go play at the Arcade just off the pier. Oh, those were the days
I remember 1 thing, the Monday storm after Thanksgiving Weekend...1982. That storm wiped out most of the California Coast. Pismo & the surrounding beaches took a big hit. We lost over 200+ feet of coast line... Where the used to be sand dunes, became sand cliffs. The wind & the rain...I am glad it hit on the Monday after Thankgiving...becase Pismo was FULL of weekenders for Thanksgiving & it would have been worse...so I am very thankful for that. It was very exciting for a 12 year old.
I need to get back down there and check it out. Thank you for letting me share that with you.
